An American Marriage by Tayari Jones is a captivating and emotionally layered novel about newlyweds Celestial and Roy, who seem to embody the promise of the American Dream. Roy is a rising young executive, while Celestial is a talented artist on the verge of a breakthrough in her career. Their future together feels full of possibility until everything changes when Roy is wrongfully arrested and sentenced to 12 years in prison for a crime Celestial knows he did not commit.

As Roy serves his sentence, Celestial is left to navigate the emotional weight of a marriage that barely had time to fully form. Over time, distance and circumstance strain their connection, and she eventually finds comfort in Andre, her childhood friend. Just as she begins to rebuild her life, Roy’s conviction is unexpectedly overturned, forcing all three of them to confront love, loyalty, and the consequences of time lost.
